Kat Lam is a first-generation Chinese American visual artist whose work explores the simplification of complex ideas, both visually and conceptually. She draws inspiration from the evolution of traditional Chinese characters to simplified Chinese, reimagining this process through her own visual language. Kat challenges conventional definitions of the canvas by painting across multiple surfaces to create an immersive experience. This approach serves as a metaphor for dismantling stereotypes and rigid expectations often placed on Asian Americans. While her work may appear minimal or one-dimensional at first glance, it invites deeper reflection that reveals layers within each piece. Through immersive and welcoming environments, Kat encourages viewers to look more closely, question assumptions, and discover complexity within simplicity.

Kat began her professional art career in 2015 and has since transformed a wide range of spaces. Her work has been commissioned by both private and public art clients across the U.S. and internationally. Dedicated to fostering welcoming, community-centered environments through art, she has collaborated with several New York City agencies, including the Department of Education, Department of Transportation, Parks and Recreation, and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Her projects include murals for libraries, outdoor classrooms, public parks, and other beautification initiatives. Kat’s work has been exhibited internationally at Galeria Dystans in Kraków, Poland and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Bogotá in Colombia. She has also participated in Facebook’s Artist in Residence program and the Nacan Art Residency. Kat currently resides in Brooklyn while her art work lives in various parts of the US, Australia, Canada, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, and Poland.
